Food[edit]

Pheidole pallidula are omnivorous.

Their nutrition consists of meat (insects or other animals), carbon hydrates (every fluid which contains sugar) and seeds/nuts.

Small colonies may ignore sugar water or other carbon hydrates completely, instead they like to suck up oil which comes out of seeds/nuts. You can for example squish a small piece of walnut and observe the ants suck up the leaking oil.

This ant species can raise a lot of brood in relation to their actual colony size, so they have a big need for proteins most of the time.

For smaller colonies fruit flies and other small insects are ideal. These can be dismembered by the ants and small parts are place near their larvae so that the larvae can feed by their own from the dead insects.

Middle or large colonies can feed on almost any type of dead insect which is not poisonous. Large colonies are even able to eat small dead mammals like mice.
